The most important thing to do is take action.

Don’t find yourself wondering why you didn’t start blogging three months ago.  Blogging can be challenging at times, but as long as you take it one step at a time there’s nothing stopping you.

Getting your own blog only involves a few easy steps.

Starting Your Blog

#1 Choose a Name

The first thing you’ll need to do is select a blog name.

The name of your blog is very important and can define your site.  Your first impression is usually formed with the overall look of your blog and it’s name.  While you can always change your blog’s design or layout, you have to stick with the name that you choose from the start.

Come up with as many usable names as you can and check to see which ones still have the domain name available.  Hopefully, one of your primary candidates for your name has a .com domain extension available.

Domain Extensions

Domain extensions are the three letter following your domain name. The most popular ones are .com, .org, and .net. I don’t have to tell you that .com is the most desirable and best option, it’s the web standard and easiest to remember.

Don’t be afraid to buy a non-.com domain name. I use .org for my blog on SEO. If you can’t get the .com for your domain name and the site using it isn’t already popular then just buy another extension and get started blogging.

You could even get a .info or .biz, but those may not be the best option because some people view them as spammy or low-quality. Also, if you buy one of them because all the other extensions are taken then you probably have at least one competitor with the same name which isn’t exactly ideal.

SEO for Domain Names

Let’s keep this simple. Search Engine Optimization relating to your domain name is about putting keywords into your domain. A keyword is a search term someone would use in a search engine.

For instance, the keyword “Laptop repair” gets 18,000 searches a month. If you were starting a blog about laptop repair then you should consider placing all or part of this phrase in your domain name like:

  • LaptopRepairBlog.com
  • BensLaptopRepair.com
  • RepairYourLaptop.com

Some people get WAY too stressed out about including keywords. If you search for laptop repair right now you’ll find the top result in Google is voree.net. Neither words appear in the domain name which is a made up word.

I would recommend including a term that describes your niche in your domain name because it will make it a little easier to rank in the search engines and people will quickly know what your site is about.

#2 Get Online

The next step is to actually get your blog online.  I recommend using Bluehost, but feel free to choose whichever host you find preferable.

Paying a web host allows you to actually host your domain name and get online.  Without hosting you only have the domain name which is like the property that your blog will be built on.

If you really don’t have the cash or if you’re not sure if you’ll enjoy blogging then you can always get started for free.  I recommend starting a self-hosted WordPress site, but you can always make a blog hosted by WordPress instead.  This only gives a fraction of the functionality and capabilities you get with a self-hosted site, but you can get your feet wet blogging.

#3 Start Blogging

Now you just need to start blogging!

The most important part of blogging is that you keep writing more quality content.  If you want your site to be more popular then just keep adding content.  You can spend time on social networks and other blogs networking, but if you don’t have awesome posts for people to read when they visit you won’t have much success.
